History
of Cancer Action’s Cancer Support Services
Cancer Action,
Inc. was formed in 1959 under the name of the Monroe County Cancer Association.
When founded, the mission of the organization was to be one of the leading non-for-profit
cancer support groups dedicated to delivering highly responsive prevention,
education, wellness programs and cancer support services and to those affected
by cancer.
One of
the Leading Cancer Support Groups for Children
Cancer Action’s goal
was a better-informed and healthier population. Building on that mission, in
2000 Cancer Action, Inc. brought the Gilda’s Club program to the Rochester
community. This collaboration provides us with the ability to present a wider
variety of programs that offer much-needed social and emotional support to those
living with cancer and their families and friends.
Programs
Camp
Open Arms is an annual summer day camp for children ages 3 –
14 affected by cancer, or blood related diseases. Although originally for children
with cancer and blood related diseases and their siblings, camp has been expanded
to include any child in our community whose life is affected by cancer or a
blood related disease. Camp now also welcomes children participating in Gilda’s
Club Noogieland Program or other area support programs for children who have
a family member with cancer or who have lost a family member to cancer. The
camps main purpose is to provide campers, including those who may be undergoing
treatment, with the opportunity for a normal camping experience, and the chance
to spend time with their siblings and peers in a fun, interactive and safe
way. Click here for more information on Camp Open Arms and how you can participate.
Camp Connect
is a unique retreat experience for adults living with cancer that blends laughter,
hope and strength. The retreat takes place each November.
Camp Spring
is a special retreat for adults living with cancer with a specific focus on
self-care, relaxation and reflection.
