At Gilda’s Club Rochester, we have been closely monitoring all the news and data related to the COVID-19 virus. Based on the initial information, we added sanitizing measures and recommendations, instituted some common-sense social distancing, and communicated with volunteers and staff, as well as program participants, reminding them to stay home if experiencing any symptoms of viral illness. It has become evident that these measures alone are no longer sufficient to keep our higher risk population safe. GCR takes this situation seriously as we recognize that people with cancer often have suppressed immune systems, putting them at significant risk of infection and complications. We also are committed to ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.
Based on the direction from our local health departments, in accordance with state officials and CDC guidelines, GCR has made a cautious decision to modify our calendar to ensure the safety of all involved, which of course is our top priority. As you are most likely aware on Friday morning 3/20/20, Governor Andrew Cuomo enacted the PAUSE program which now requires that 100% of the staff of any business/nonprofit considered non-essential must work from home. Gilda’s is considered non-essential and will be following the recommended guidelines. Our focus during this time, is the same as it has always been, to be here for our members and families and to ensure no one faces cancer alone. We are taking a range of actions to meet your needs at this critical time.
We will be offering some of our support groups and activities virtually/online and will send you information when available and ready to go. Our staff will be working remotely during the hours of Monday-Friday 9AM-4:30PM and remain ready to assist you by phone, email and Zoom (our videoconferencing program) Please don’t hesitate to call us.
